What Is "Crossfading" in Audio Recording?

Crossfading in Audio Recording (or video editing) - You may have heard the term "cross-fade" before and wondered what it meant or how you could use it. This should help explain.  First, the article explains what a "fade" is, and then what it means to cross-fade.  The concept can be used to either create pleasing entrances and exits for, say, background music (or any audio really).  But more often crossfading is used whenever there is a transition from one audio "item" to another, even if it is just to join the same audio track after cutting out mistakes, for example.
Cross-fading is also commonly used in video to create smooth transitions.
